G. lest n. “gathering, assembly, concourse, moot” (Category: Crowd, Multitude)
A word in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “gathering, assembly, concourse, moot” (GL/53), likely based on the early root ᴱ√LESE “collect” (QL/53). Initially Tolkien marked lest as archaic (†) and the equivalent of (modern) G. glest of the same meaning, but this was marked through, as well as the appearances of glest elsewhere in the lexicon (GL/39). Thus it seems Tolkien decided lest was the normal (non-archaic) form of this Gnomish word.
