An apparent verb inside the back cover the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “free, rid” as a derivative of the early root ᴱ√vḷt, but lower on the page Tolkien indicated it was only used in its suffixal form G. -(a)vlid “-less” (GL/23).
