Q. haranyë n. “century (100 years)” (Category: Year)
A word for a Númenórean century of 100 years (LotR/1108), contrasted with yén which is an Elvish century of 144 years.
Conceptual Development: Drafts of The Lord of the Rings appendices instead had ᴹQ. quantiën “full year” for 100 years, and in that document a yén was also 100 years (PM/126). In The Etymologies of the 1930s, a qantien (= qanta “full” + yén “year”) was the name of the last day of the year, because in that document a yén was an ordinary solar year (Ety/YEN). In Tolkien’s later writings, the last day of the year was Mettarë (LotR/1108-9).
